On May 25, 1967 Celtic Football Club made history by becoming the first British team to win the European Cup.
Eleven players who were all born within a 30-mile radius of Celtic Park beat the Italian aristocrats of Inter Milan and took their place forever in the annals of fame.
This is the story, four decades after that memorable triumph in the Portuguese capital, of each of the eight surviving Lisbon Lions, their own official take on exactly what happened before, during and after that never-tobe-forgotten encounter that shook the football world.

Remarkably, the Lions have never sat down in the intervening 40 years and put their exclusive thoughts together in one book - this is that unique book. Billy McNeill, Jim Craig, Tommy Gemmell, John Clark, Willie Wallace, Stevie Chalmers, Bertie Auld and Bobby Lennox give their forthright views on the march towards Lisbon and a place in football history.

Who was the Lisbon Lion who thought the European Cup Final was the easiest game of the season? Who now admits he made life difficult for Jock Stein? Who was the player who was conned by the Celtic manager? Which Lion had a running battle with his team-mates throughout the European Cup Final? And who thought Celtic had won the trophy before the kick-off? All is revealed!

The Lions also give fascinating and thought-provoking insights to manager supreme Jock Stein, goalkeeper extraordinary Ronnie Simpson, midfield master Bobby Murdoch and the incomparable Jimmy Johnstone.

Candid, frank and funny, LISBON LIONS: The Real Inside Story reveals the secrets of Lisbon 1967, unlocked by the men who knew the inside track, the players themselves.

CELTIC Under-19s took a major step towards retaining the Scottish Youth League title with a comprehensive win over Hearts on Saturday.

With second-placed Rangers beating Dundee United 2-0 on Friday, the Hoops needed a win to regain top place in the league and slammed home three goals in the space of four minutes in a stunning first-half display.

On target for John McLaughlan’s side were Paul Cahillane (2), Cillian Sheridan and Mark Millar. The victory leaves Celtic one point ahead of Rangers with three league games to play.

On a perfect day for football in the capital, Celtic took the initiative from the start of this vital encounter – the Hoops’ third match in the last week.

After a 4-0 league win over Kilmarnock last weekend, McLaughlan’s youngsters travelled north on Wednesday – beating Aberdeen 2-1 to reach the final of the Scottish Youth Cup.

It was back to league duty this morning and, spurred on by outstanding captain Paul Caddis, Celtic never allowed Hearts to get going.

After dominating the opening, Celtic stormed ahead in the 29th minute. A tremendous passing move saw the ball being switched from right to left and ended with Danny Lafferty crossing for Sheridan, who didn’t mess about with his finish.

Almost straight from kick-off, it was 2-0. A long pass forward was flicked on by Sheridan and Cahillane, scampering away from the Hearts defence, showed great composure to slot the ball into the net.

Amazingly, two minutes later Celtic were 3-0 ahead. Mark Millar, picking up possession in midfield, stormed forward and unleashed a venomous 30-yard drive for a stunning goal.

Following that goal glut, Celtic controlled the game and it was no surprise when they increased their lead in the second period.

Caddis broke forward from his right-back berth and found in-from Irish striker Cahillane, who finished superbly for his sixth goal in four games.

Hearts grabbed a late consolation but this was a massive win for Celtic, who now hold the upper hand going into the closing stages of the league campaign.

McLaughlan said: “That’s three great victories in a week and I can’t praise the boys enough. They excelled themselves.

“They’ve shown a lot of character, fitness and ability in the last seven days and they were again outstanding today.

“It was a beautiful day for football and the players made the most of it. Some of the passing was first-class and the goals were excellent. Paul Caddis, as captain, was also exceptional.

“With Rangers winning on Friday, the pressure was back on us today, but they responded as well as anyone could have hoped. We never let Hearts get into the game at any point and it was a vital win for us.

“I said before the Kilmarnock game that this was a big week for this side and they have answered all the questions – both individually and collectively.

“Their discipline was also tremendous and we have now given ourselves a big chance with just three league games to play.

“We face Hearts again on Friday at home and the boys know that a win in that game opens up a four-point advantage – with Rangers not playing until Saturday.

“It’s in our own hands now. The boys have shown what they are capable of in the last four games. We’ve scored 14 goals during that period but we have to keep that going.”

Paul Telfer leaves Celtic

DEFENDER Paul Telfer has left Celtic for family reasons. The 35-year-old, who played his last game for the Hoops against AC Milan in the San Siro Stadium, had been struggling with a groin injury in recent weeks and didn’t feature in Celtic’s three most recent league matches.

A Celtic spokesperson said: “It is with great regret that Celtic FC have announced today that Paul Telfer has ended his contract with Celtic for family reasons. He has now decided to return to England to be with his family.

“Celtic have reluctantly accepted Paul’s decision and we fully respect his request to end his contract with the Club. Clearly, everyone at the Club wishes Paul and his family all the very best for the future.”

Paul Telfer signed for Celtic in July 2005 from Southampton and helped the Hoops to win the SPL title and the League Cup in his first season at the club. He has also played his part in this season’s campaign, as the Hoops bid to retain the title.

He made a total of 73 appearances for the club, scoring one goal.

Strachan admits to closing nerves

Manager Gordon Strachan was not too downhearted as Celtic lost a late goal and had to settle for a share of the points against Dundee United.

The SPL leaders have picked up just one point from their last three matches.

And Strachan told BBC Radio Scotland: "It's always a nervous time getting over the finish line but we just have to deal with it.

"I thought we controlled the second half after United were the better team in the first half."
