Sutton concedes England days are over.

Celtic striker Chris Sutton has conceded he has no chance of playing for England.

Sven-Goran Eriksson had Hoops team-mate Alan Thompson watched against Dundee United and that led to speculation that Sutton could also be in line for an international call-up.

But neither player was included in the squad for the friendly against Portugal and Sutton admits their chance has gone.

He told the Daily Record: "I've been playing for 14 years so England have had ample time to look at me.

"They clearly don't fancy me and I don't feel as though I have anything to prove to them.

"I can't be bothered talking about it anymore to be honest. I'm getting ready to have a good holiday with my family in the summer.

"They sent someone up to watch Thommo against Dundee United 10 days ago. Now he knows his chance has gone as well.

"I don't know what the problem is. There is a bit of arrogance down there but Celtic know they are a good side."

Maloney blow sours U21s' win
Stephen Sullivan

Monday February 23, 2003,
Scottish Premier League Under-21s,
Excelsior Stadium

CELTIC… 4
Smith 9, McGeady 15, Beattie 66, Quinn 89
PARTICK THISTLE… 0

Celtic’s unstoppable under-21s followed in the first team’s footsteps on
Monday by preserving their unbeaten league status, but the latest in a
succession of emphatic victories was overshadowed by a serious injury to
Shaun Maloney.

The match was just five minutes old when the bustling little striker was
felled, fairly, by Partick Thistle’s Edward Forrest as he attempted to
reach a reverse pass from Jamie Smith at the right hand edge of the
area.

At the time, it appeared an innocuous enough challenge, but the frantic
gesturing of both Forrest and Maloney’s own team-mates immediately
betrayed the severity of the damage inflicted. Indeed, there was
complete silence inside the Excelsior Stadium as the youngster, plainly
in some distress, was stretchered from the field to receive medical
attention.

It was to Celtic’s credit that they recovered from this early setback to
claim victory, with goals from Smith – moved up front in place of his
injured team-mate – Aiden McGeady and Craig Beattie consolidating Kenny
McDowall’s side’s position at the league’s summit.

Smith was the first to strike, swivelling to volley home left-footed in
nine minutes following a terrific run and cross from Ross Wallace on the
left. It was a lead that Thistle, for whom Jorge Cadete played the full
match, never looked capable of clawing back, and Celtic could easily
have stretched further in front just a few minutes later.

On that occasion, it was to Craig Beattie that the chance fell, but
having been released by a magnificent through ball from Ulrik Laursen,
the striker spurned the opportunity by checking back inside when a first
time shot appeared the better option.

Yet, with just over a quarter-of-an-hour played, Celtic did claim a
second goal, and a stunning one at that. McGeady scored it, with the
skilful youngster – who was a source of constant torment to the Thistle
defence - twisting his hapless marker inside out before lashing an
unstoppable left-foot shot beyond Jamie Langfield from 25 yards.

It was a fantastic goal from a player very much in the mood and, with
Celtic now toying with their visitors, McGeady again went close midway
through the half, drifting in from the left before testing Langfield’s
reflexes with a stinging right-foot drive. Three minutes before the
break, McGeady was at it once again, this time dazzling the Jags’
defence with some mesmerising wingplay on the right before setting up
Wallace for a well-struck volley, agilely tipped over by Langfield.

Cadete, meanwhile, appeared either unfit, disinterested or both, and as
a result found himself in the back pocket of the composed Paul Lawson
throughout the entire 90 minutes.
Yet the former Hoops striker was just one of 11 Thistle players
outclassed by their Celtic counterparts, and it was no surprise when the
home side stretched further in front 20 minutes into the second half.

Smith, advancing menacingly from midfield, created the chance with a
superb dinked pass in behind the Thistle defence, and there was Beattie,
sneaking in on his marker’s blind side to stroke the ball home.

And, even then, Thistle’s misery wasn’t yet over.

The impressive Rocco Quinn even found time to complete the rout with a
well-taken fourth after referee Gary Cheyne had chosen to ignore
Beattie’s seemingly legitimate claims for a penalty.

A fine victory then, and yet all thoughts at the final whistle were for
Maloney.

Martin O'Neill speculation continues.

Hard on the heels of the team's record breaking 24th victory in a row the bongo drums are again beating on when Martin O'Neill will be leaving the club.

The speculation has started again due to Liverpool being knocked out of the FA Cup yesterday afternoon by Portsmouth, there's also reports on some websites that a deal has already been done that will see the hoops boss take over Tottenham at the start of next season.

Martin O'Neill I'm sure has heard it all before and the only thing on his mind right now will be the preparation for Thursday night's UEFA Cup tie against FK Teplice.

FK Teplice draw at home.

Celtic UEFA cup opponents FK Teplice failed to cash in on home advantage this afternoon when they were held to a goalless draw by Sigma Olomouc.

This is the second game FK Teplice have played since returning from their winter break and so far 180 minutes of football have failed to produce a goal for the Czech cup winners.

Celtic supporters will be hoping that their goal drought continues on Thursday night at Celtic Park when we take them on in the UEFA Cup 3rd round 1st leg match.

Celtic 90 minutes away from new record.

VICTORY over Partick Thistle on Sunday will extend Celtic's Scottish Premier League winning streak to 24 matches, surpassing the record Martin O'Neill's men now share with the 1963-64 Morton side.

Setting records is virtually all that remains for Celtic this season – at least in the league, where their unmatchable form has allowed them to open up a 13-point lead over champions Rangers.

Celtic's dominance in a season which has seen their Glasgow rivals beset by financial and injury problems has inevitably fuelled concerns about Scottish soccer's lack of strength in depth.

But Celtic skipper Paul Lambert believes comment along those lines fails to recognise the genuine quality in the squad that O'Neill's guided to last season's UEFA Cup final, the club's first European final since 1970.

"I think you judge it on European terms and this is the only team who have taken Celtic to a major European final since that era," said Lambert. "You can't underestimate how big that is.

"We came within a whisker of making the last 16 of the Champions League this season and I don't think anyone has outplayed us in that competition, with the exception of the away game against Porto in our first season's involvement.

"I do think it is the best Celtic squad for many, many years. You are always judged on your successes and especially on what you do in Europe. That's where you make your name.

"It's nice doing it domestically but to achieve what we did in Europe last season was phenomenal.

"The last time a Celtic side got to a European final was 34 years ago and what the current bunch of guys in the dressing room have achieved is really unbelieveable."

But few would bet against Celtic restoring their advantage and entertaining the record books 24 hours later.

Fixture changes announced

Celtic will play Dundee at Dens Park on St Patrick's Day Wednesday 17th March 2004, the match kicks off at 7.45 pm and will be broadcast live by BBC Scotland.

Our game the following Sunday on Sunday 21st March 2004 at Easter Road against Hibs has now been moved to a 1.05pm kick again for broadcast by BBC Scotland.

This of course is followed up by yet another away Sunday fixture when on Sunday 28th March 2004 we face Rangers in the last Old Firm game of the season, this one has a 12.30pm kick off again being televised live by BBC Scotland.

Three away fixtures on the bounce, the suits at the SPL are definitely going out of there way to make it easy for us to win the championship away from Celtic Park.

Jorge Cadete to turn out for Raith Rovers

Raith Rovers are ready to hand former Celtic striker Jorge Cadete a return to Scottish football.

The 35-year-old former Portuguese international trained with Rovers yesterday and will feature in this evening’s Reserve League Cup semi-final against St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park if the necessary clearance can be obtained in time.

Cadete was a major success in the 1996-7 season with Celtic, netting 38 times in 44 appearances after his £400,000 move from Sporting Lisbon.

However, a contractual dispute with the Hoops brought about his departure from Parkhead.

Mozambique-born Cadete subsequently returned to Portugal with Benfica before embarking on a short stint with Bradford in the English Premiership.

Of late, the free agent has made more headlines off the park than on it, having taken part in a Portuguese version of the reality TV show Big Brother.

However, this time it will be Raith boss Antonio Calderon who decides whether he stays or goes.

Thompson & Sutton for England call up?

Alan Thompson could be in line for a call-up after Tord Grip admitted he has been impressed by what he has seen of the midfielder.

"His delivery from dead ball situations is a real threat to anybody and a big addition to any side," admitted the Norwegian.

"When I saw him he was good in the first half against Rangers and then he got injured and wasn't involved much after. But he is fit again and played very well against Dunfermline and Hearts."

"We still have time to see players - we have another friendly game in the future so there is time," Grip explained.

"They (Thompson and his team-mate Chris Sutton) still have a big chance but there won't be many major shocks."

Maloney signs new contract extension.

Shaun Maloney has agreed a deal to keep him at the club until 2007.
The 21-year-old has accepted a two-year extension to his current contract which was due to expire in 2005. "I'm extremely happy here and I want to fight for a place at the club. There was talk about a new contract and when they put it down I was happy to sign it," he said.

The Scottish Under-21 international has managed just ten starts and five goals for Celtic this term due to the form of Henrik Larsson, John Hartson and Chris Sutton. However, Maloney believes he can stake a claim to be the long-term replacement for Larsson, who will leave Celtic Park in the summer when his contract runs out.

SFA issue relegation threat

The Scottish Football Association has warned that clubs who become
insolvent could face the threat of relegation.

The SFA will be involved in a new working group to investigate the
perilous financial state of the game.

Dunfermline are the latest club in crisis and need to slash players'
wages to avoid following Motherwell, Dundee and Livingston into
administration.

SFA chief David Taylor said: "If clubs are not seen to be trading
solvently they could be penalised by relegation."

However, given the number of clubs in difficulty and the sub-standard
facilities of clubs in the First Division, it begs the question: who
would replace the penalised teams?

"Nobody wants to put clubs into more difficulties than they have already
got themselves into - but fair competition is important in both
financial and sporting senses," Taylor continued in the Scottish Daily
Mail.

"Our role is to ensure the good governance of the game and we don't want
clubs falling off the edge of a cliff. There is a degree of urgency
here.

"I am sure there would be all sorts of legal challenges to automatic
relegation. But as long as sporting bodies act in a reasonable and fair
manner they can impose penalties in order to protect the sport."

The Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football League will also be
represented in the working group.

VARGA WANTS LONG-TERM BHOYS STAY

Monday 9th  February 2004

11:30

Celtic defender Stanislav Varga has revealed he would like to end his playing days at Parkhead.

The giant Slovakian has been a revelation at the heart of the Celtic defence and is set to win a new deal.

Varga initially joined Celtic on a short-term deal after being released by Sunderland, but he has triggered a clause in his contract earning a new one-year contract by making more than 30 appearances this season.

Bhoys boss Martin O'Neill is keen to keep Varga and the player is ready to commit his future to the SPL leaders as he is content with life in Glasgow.

"I haven't spoken to him (O'Neill) yet," said Varga. "But of course I would like to stay here until the end of my career.

"I am definitely as happy here as I've been in the past three years and I'm enjoying my life again."

LARSSON WILL BE DIFFICULT TO REPLACE

Martin O'Neill believes the Parkhead money men are well aware it will be "expensive" to replace Henrik Larsson.

The former Sweden striker will finally leave Celtic this summer after seven years of great service, but that will leave a big hole in O'Neill's first-team squad which the ambitious Northern Irishman and his prudent financial backers acknowledge will be difficult to fill.

"I'm not looking at the minute. The January window has passed and I'm reasonably happy with the position we're in. "To replace Henrik would be pretty difficult and expensive to do so, but I'm sure that the board are aware of those things," said the Celtic boss.

"I think between now and the end of the season that is something I will look at. It is not something the board are not aware of," he added.

The 32-year-old marksman has amassed 221 goals for Celtic, making him fourth in the club's all-time scoring charts. He is now just 10 goals behind club legend Stevie Chalmers in third with less than half the season to go.

Larsson has his sights on that target but he insists it will be just "tough luck" if he fails in his latest quest.

"It would be nice to," he shrugged in typically-blasé fashion. "It's never been my ambition but it was my ambition to score as many goals as possible. But if I get it it would be nice, and if I don't then it's tough luck."

From the Liverpool FC website

Daily Record admit no truth in O'Neill story

The Scottish Daily Record newspaper has today admitted there was no
truth whatsoever in a story they published stating that Martin O'Neill
was to become the new manager of Liverpool Football Club.

The article, which they ran on 7 February 2003, claimed Celtic boss
O'Neill would be leaving his position at Parkhead and taking over from
Gerard Houllier at the start of the 2003/04 season.

Liverpool Football Club strenuously denied this claim, citing the report
to be totally untrue, and, in admitting they were wrong to run the
story, the newspaper has been forced to pay out substantial damages and
costs.

A statement read out at the High Court in Liverpool today read:

"The claim arises from an article published in the Daily Record on 7
February 2003 under the headline "I have the proof O'Neill is on his way
to Liverpool says Talk Sport's Mike Parry." The article claimed that
Martin O'Neill would leave his position as manager of Celtic and become
Liverpool's manager at the start of the 2003/2004 football season. It
reported that Mike Parry, host of Talk Sport, had stunned his audience
by stating that he had it on good authority that O'Neill had signed up
to become Gerard Houllier's successor at Anfield - despite having signed
a 12 month rollover contract with Celtic.

"Readers of the Daily Record were likely to understand from the article
that the Claimants had surreptitiously negotiated, agreed and signed a
legally binding contract with Martin O'Neill to make him manager of
Liverpool FC for the 2003/2004 season, behind the back of Gerard
Houllier, the current manager, and despite their public statements of
support for him, and had thereby behaved in an underhand and
hypocritical manner.

"The Defendant now accepts that, contrary to the article, there was no
truth in this allegation.

"The Claimants purpose in bringing these proceedings was to ensure that
erroneous reporting was corrected and their reputation restored. While
the Claimants would have preferred that the article had never been
published, they accept that they have achieved all that they can by
bringing these proceedings and feel suitably vindicated by reason of the
payment of damages and their costs and the publication of an apology in
The Daily Record."

Hoops boss hoping to tie up players on new deals

Martin O'Neill today revealed he is preparing to open contract talks with the backbone of his team.
The Celtic manager will lose striker Henrik Larsson at the end of the season, but the Irishman has begun moves to ensure Hoops stars with just 18 months remaining on their
contracts do not follow the Swede.
Chris Sutton, Neil Lennon, Alan Thompson and John Hartson are the men in question, and, with the transfer window now closed, O'Neill is channelling most of his energies on keeping them at Parkhead.
Defender Joos Valgaeren and goalkeeper Rab Douglas are also out of contract at the end of next season, and O'Neill will want to find out how they feel about extending their stay.
The priority at the moment are the players who are free agents this summer, and he hopes to be in a position to announce longer deals for Jackie McNamara, Stan Varga and Shaun Maloney within the next couple of weeks

Agent: Larsson '100 per cent' on leaving

Henrik Larsson is "100 per cent" set on leaving Celtic in the summer - probably to join a club in southern Europe.

The former Sweden international had been linked with Newcastle and Arsenal in the Barclaycard Premiership.

But his agent Rob Jansen maintains his client is looking to warmer climes for his next move.

Jansen said: "I met with Henrik at the weekend and he is now clearer in his plans.

"The only thing I can say right now is that it is 100 per cent certain that Henrik will continue his career in football and he will be leaving Celtic in the summer.

"He will probably move to a club in southern Europe although I have to stress that I have not yet spoken to anyone about a deal."

Meanwhile, Celtic forward Shaun Maloney is set to agree a new contract with the Hoops after "constructive" talks between the club and player's representative, Mel Stein.

The Scotland Under-21 international has 18 months left on his current deal but manager Martin O'Neill is determined to sort out the player's future swiftly.

Stein told the Scottish Daily Express: "We had a very constructive meeting and I think we have made a lot of progress.

"I am confident that everything will be sorted out and Shaun's new contract will be agreed and signed within the next couple of weeks."
